Shape-Adaptive DCT for Object-Based Compression

This paper presents an effective method of progressive image compression based on SPIHT algorithm and shape-adaptive DCT. Usually, this algorithm uses the DWT to perform compression. For that, we propose to reorganize the DCT coefficients in order to have a multi-resolution structure. So, instead to use 8×8 DCT block who gives three levels, we propose to increase the DCT block size to 16×16 and 32×32 to obtain four and five decomposition levels. Simulation results show that the proposed method demonstrate a state-of-the-art quality of the final estimate, both in terms of objective criteria and visual appearance.
